Are Starbucks hiding their profits on the planet Vulcan?







I just love the fact that the BBC have a Democracy Live channel where you can watch important government business. The Public Accounts Committee may sound incredibly dull, but I found this footage riveting. The committee grills executives from Starbucks, Amazon and Google about their tax arrangements. Quite apart from the content, it provides a wealth of material for anyone interested in how we interpret body language as a cue to a person's honesty. But for me it raised a serious issue about Starbucks. Is it run by aliens?

The tl;dr version: The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) makes humongous amounts of money from its journal and meetings, but spends very little on helping its members, while treating overseas researchers with indifference bordering on disdain. I first became concerned about the Society for Neuroscience back in 2010 when I submitted a paper to the Journal of Neuroscience. The instructions to authors explained that there was a submission fee (at the time about $50). Although I 'd never come across such a practice before, I reckoned it was not a large sum, and so went ahead. The Instructions for Authors explained that there was a veto on citation of unpublished work. I wanted to cite a paper of mine that had been ‘accepted in principle’ but needed minor changes, and I explained this in my cover letter. My most popular posts of 2016

The end of the year is a good time to look over the blog, to see which posts garnered most attention. Perhaps not surprisingly, among the six most popular were several pieces I wrote related to scientific publishing and the reproducibility crisis: examining the problem and potential solutions. This is a topic I have become increasingly passionate about, as I worry about how the current system encourages us to waste precious time and money pursuing 'exciting' and 'ground-breaking' results, rather than doing thoughtful, careful science. Of course, these are not mutually exclusive, but, sadly, the emphasis on innovation and productivity can lead people to cut corners, and we then end up with findings that are not a solid basis on which to build further research. Getting genetic effect sizes in perspective

My research focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders - specific language impairment, dyslexia, and autism in particular. For all of these there is evidence of genetic influence. But the research papers reporting relevant results are often incomprehensible to people who aren’t geneticists (and sometimes to those who are).  This leaves us ignorant of what has really been found, and subject to serious misunderstandings. Just as preamble, evidence for genetic influences on behaviour comes in two kinds. The first approach, sometimes referred to as genetic epidemiology or behaviour genetics allows us to infer how far genes are involved in causing individual differences by studying similarities between people who have different kinds of genetic relationship.
